One of the projects which found partners through Idealist is the Integrated Project ENABLED, for web accessibility for the blind and visually impaired. Through the web, information can be accessed remotely; people can interact with friends and family; services such as online shopping, paying bills and distant learning can be provided to the public. However, people with blindness or other forms of disability are not able to take full advantage due to the inaccessibility of the technology itself.

The ENABLED project addresses this challenge through firstly developing technologies that create universal accessible content on the web, algorithms convert existing inaccessible content to be accessible, and secondly developing tools that enable easy access to information, and interfaces that are adaptable and interoperable no matter where the user is and what equipment the user is using. The project started in September 2004 and has a budget of almost 6M€.

The consortium is led by Queens University Belfast and includes British Telecom, Siemens from Germany and CEA, the French Atomic Energy Authority, as well as six SMEs and a number of research institutes and universities. Idealist found half of the 14 partners in the project.
